Alfred Friendly Press Partners will select seven Macedonian journalists to train for three weeks at the Missouri School of Journalism and work for six weeks in U.S. newsrooms in spring 2018.

The deadline for applications is Dec. 15, 2017. Applicants must have three years of experience in the journalism profession, be 25 to 35 years old, and be fluent in English. The Macedonia project is funded through a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Skopje.

The training for Macedonia journalists at the university runs parallel with the annual Alfred Friendly Press Partners training seminar beginning March 17 and ending April 6. The professional internships take place from April 9 through April 27, followed by a session preparing fellows to share their lessons with colleagues back home. After participants return to Macedonia, they will be mentored by virtual trainers during the summer to help them complete an innovative media project.

The training prepares reporters, editors and producers to practice professional, ethical and innovative journalism. More than a dozen faculty members lead classroom discussions and hands-on lessons in computer labs. The agenda includes lectures on ethics and communications law, reporting on business, religion, and science, using social media for reporting, using mobile tools for reporting, data reporting and multimedia reporting. In the newsrooms, fellows will be guided by mentors, participate in daily newsroom activities, get stories published and gain an understanding of journalism in America. The fellowship covers all costs during the program, including travel, housing, health insurance and visas, and provides a monthly stipend to cover basic living expenses.

Since 1984, Alfred Friendly Press Partners has trained more than 300 journalists from 90+ countries.
