Internship – Migration and Diversity Policy Research Assistant in Brussels

The Institute for European Studies (IES) cluster for Migration, Diversity and Justice (MDJ) is looking for an intern during the spring terms 2018, based in Brussels.

The MDJ cluster conducts high quality and policy-relevant research and provides education and academic services in a wide range of topics related to migration, immigrant integration, justice and home affairs as well as diversity policies (from the local level right up to the European Union and United Nations). We concentrate in particular on the following sub-themes:

  • The politics of refugee protection and migration control: asylum, border control, migration and immigrant integration policies of the EU and its member states; solidarity and burden-sharing in Europe; EU cooperation with countries of migrants’ origin and transit.
  • Justice and equality policies in an increasingly diverse Europe: community formation and cohesion in increasingly heterogeneous European societies.

The MDJ cluster is looking for a intern with a strong interest in migration and diversity policies. Through this internship, the MDJ cluster offers a vibrant working environment and the opportunity to get first-hand experience in its academic and policy activities. The internship would also allow the intern to further develop its knowledge and skillset in EU and national migration and diversity policies. The intern will primarily work with Prof. Florian Trauner and Prof. Ilke Adam.

We are looking for someone interested in contributing to:

  • Assistance for research projects relating to migration and diversity policies (desk research, conducting interviews, data-analysis, editorial assistance);
  • Assistance for the organisation of events.

The candidate should have

  • Excellent writing and speaking skills in English (= working language); the knowledge of French or Dutch or (fluently spoken) Arabic are an asset
  • A strong interest in research;
  • Excellent computer skills (analysing and formatting data through Microsoft Office programmes, Mendeley);
  • An organised working style and a pro-active attitude;
  • The ability to work in a team as well as autonomously;
  • A degree or are pursuing his/her Masters;
  • A good knowledge, understanding or interest in immigration, immigrant integration or anti-discrimination policies.

This is a full-time internship with a duration of around three months. The internship may be combined with own research in the context of an MA thesis or the preparation of a PhD research proposal, to which assistance can be offered.

We offer interesting and varied work in a friendly, multicultural atmosphere, and our interns are quickly involved in many different activities. You will have the possibility to learn and grow your expertise in various fields.

The internship is unpaid, but we offer a reimbursements of costs of 7,5 Euros per working day and lunch vouchers.

Please send a concise letter of motivation (not more than one page) and your CV as soon as possible to Ms. Hanna Schneider (email: [email protected]).
